loooooooooved this queen (fuck substack creator studio all my homies hate substack creator studio) - a lot of the response to your essay did feel very disingenuous and unfair and it feels driven by the fact this platform is edging closer to a model where discourse happens through snarky quote-tweeting or its equivalent rather than engaging directly :/ also thank you sm for your recommendation!!!! <3
are you a mind reader?? you’ve put everything I’ve been feeling the past couple of days into the perfect description. my most recent post blew up in a way I was not expecting - probably because I was feeding into the girl discourse myself lol! I’ve also been obsessively checking my stats, which is funny considering I deactivated all my social accounts so I would avoid this very thing.
You hit the nail on the head. I thought about writing solely with the zeitgeist for a hot second to keep my engagement rates up (attention is validating and addicting as hell), but got a flashback to all the 2010 era YouTubers making videos about why they burned out. so I’m going to keep writing about topics that I’m want to dive deeper into the moment, whether they’re tapping into a trendy topic or not. loved your piece and definitely need to read the second sex asap!!
the obsession with checking stats is very real! i think this is why i love reading (and writing) posts like this... they feel more like an effort at self-archiving different seasons of my life. if no one reads them, it's fine! at least i have a record of my days.
yes exactly! It’s different to a diary but it’s definitely not entirely audience-oriented. I feel like especially at the sort of size following we have on here it becomes a v weird relationship to the platform.
You are so gifted with words! Subscribed!
Thank you lovely!
